Sarah Ann Lawrence (18th January 1892 – 26th February 1985) was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, to Abraham and Alice Lawrence. Baptised on 27th March 1892, at the Church of St Michael, Upper Pitt Street, her early life was marked by the untimely death of her mother, Alice, due to pulmonary heart failure in 1896.
In the 1901 census, Sarah Ann resided at 18 Upper Pitt Street, her family home and a boarding house for seamen managed by her father. By the 1911 census, she was living with her brother Dwaney and his family at 104 Upper Pitt Street.
Sarah Ann married mariner George Wayland on 1st March, 1911, at St Nicholas Church, with Sarah Ann's sister Mary Lawrence and someone named Amy Meadowcroft present as witnesses. George and Sarah Ann probably met at the boarding house. They went on to have eight children over a span of 21 years.
In the 1921 census, the family lived at 13 Kent street, a property which had formerly been occupied by the Quarless family (in the 1911 census). In the 1921 census and during the 1939 register, Sarah Ann's occupation was listed as domestic duties, reflecting the role she played in managing her household. Tragically, she experienced the loss of two children, Alice and Edmund, by 1930.
Sarah Ann outlived all her full siblings, becoming the last surviving child of Abraham and Alice Lawrence (one half sister, Bella survived Sarah Ann). She passed away on 26th February, 1985, in Liverpool at the age of 93 and found her final resting place at Anfield Cemetery. Her legacy lives on through her descendants and the enduring bonds she nurtured throughout her life.
