Referred to as ‘the second city of the British Empire,’ it lived up to its’ standing by monopolising global commodities, during this era, with cotton, sugar, spice and tobacco bringing about profound economic and social change.
Liverpool played a pivotal role, connecting the America’s bountiful commodities to British manufacturers that supported the foundations of the Industrial Revolution. The city also stood as a significant gateway to Ireland and the far east, fostering strong connections that played a pivotal role in our family histories.
Liverpool was the destination for the citizens of Empire. The south docks area of Pitt Street, Frederick Street (China Town), Gilbert Street and the surrounding area of Park Lane and Duke Street became the epi-centre of cosmopolitan Liverpool.
