Abraham Lawrence, born in 1847 in Jamaica, had a father named Dowany (also known as Duanie) Lawrence. Despite our efforts, no birth record for Abraham has been located.
Abraham's presence in England is first documented in 1870 through his marriage certificate, which records his union with Alice Jones at the Church of St. Matthew in Liverpool, England. This document also reveals Abraham's father's name. Both Abraham and his father were listed as "Mariners" by profession.
Surprisingly, Abraham does not appear in the 1871 UK census, though his wife, Alice, is recorded as residing at 39 Major Street in Kirkdale, with her occupation noted as "Mariner's Wife - At Sea."
Abraham and Alice married when he was 23 years old and she was 18. They welcomed thirteen children into their family. Following Alice's passing, Abraham remarried Margaret Carr, and together they had two children. Abraham's life came to an end on 29 July 1914 in Liverpool, Lancashire, when he was 67 years old.
This image shown is the only known photo of Abraham Lawrence. The full photo show's his daughters Eliza at the front, we think it's Harriett on the left (as she is the next elder sister to Eliza and the face looks very similar to her pictures as an adult) and we think it is Elizabeth (judging by the age difference) in the middle next to Abraham. This photo would have been taken around 1895.
