Ernest Arthur Quarless in his 20s.
Born on 9th October, 1905, Ernest grew up in a large family with ties to seafaring. After his schooling at Windsor CP School, Ernie followed in his father's footsteps and joined the Merchant Navy, embarking on his first voyage in 1923.
Throughout his maritime career, Ernie traveled extensively, serving on various ships with destinations ranging from Africa and New Zealand to Egypt and India. During World War II, he sailed in dangerous convoys and played a critical role in transporting troops and goods. His involvement in the D-Day landings, where he served aboard the Llangibby Castle, was particularly notable. He helped land Canadian troops at Juno Beach and later supported operations at Omaha and Utah beaches.
For his service, Ernest was awarded several medals, including the 1939–1945 Star, the Atlantic Star, the Pacific Star, the Africa Star, the Italy Star, among others. After the war, he settled back in Liverpool, working as a dock labourer until his retirement. Ernest Quarless passed away on 14th May, 1988.
