Dwaney Lawrence, born on the 18th March 1881 in Liverpool, Lancashire, was the son of Alice Jones and Abraham Lawrence. The family resided at 64 Gilbert Street in 1881 and later at 14 Kent Street in 1891. Dwaney was baptised at St. Michael's, Liverpool, on 28 June 1882.
Following the death of his mother, Alice, in 1896, Dwaney lived with his father, Abraham, at 18 Upper Pitt Street in 1901, working as a butcher. He married Mary Ellen (Nellie) Sharkey on the 20th October 1902, and together they had five children.
Tragedy struck with the loss of their sons Jacob and and Arthur all prior to the great war. Despite these hardships, Dwaney continued to build his family, welcoming Alice in 1909, Ernest in 1916, and Ethel in June 1919.
The family lived at various addresses, including 104 Upper Pitt Street in 1911, 71 Cornwallis Street in 1918, and 69 Cornwallis Street in 1921. Dwaney worked as a ship's laborer, and in 1939, he resided at 76 Berkley Road. The Berkley Street address is remembered by descendants as a bakery and it's said that Dwaney was a baker here in his latter years.
Dwaney Lawrence passed away on the 1st September 1945 in Liverpool at the age of 64. His wife, Mary Ellen, followed on the 1st February 1946, marking 42 years of marriage. Dwaney and Nellie had three sons and two daughters.
Jacob and Arthur passed away in childhood. While Ernest, who was born and raised in the bakery on Berkley Street, continued the family name, raising a large family in at the Berkley Street bakery in Toxteth. Ethel, lived with her mother and father in the 1939 register but not long after, moved to Barnsley. Here she would meet her husband, Colin Tingey, they had two children. Alice pursued a career as a nurse and also later resided in Barnsley, where she married her husband, a miner named Benjamin Harston, the uncle of her brother in law, Colin. They had one child together. The Lawrence descendants cherish the stories of their Berkley Street ancestors.
